Home Based Business Success: What Does It Really Take?

I spent 6 years doing direct sales and networking just like each and every one of you who may be looking for the perfect business opportunity or the right technique. Many people ask, “what does it take? What does it require? How do I become successful?”
Jeff Mills, who has sold over a million dollars of product and earned over $700,000 in the last two years in the direct sales industry, recently interviewed Jeffrey Combs of Golden Mastermind Seminars, and found these insights so remarkable, he decided to report on them for you in this special article.
The questions asked above are all great questions, but what most people don’t understand is why they do what they do, and in our industry, direct sales and networking, what does it require? What does it really take?
It requires that you have the ability to create rapport, the ability to connect with people, and most importantly understand who is serious, who is interested, who is committed and who isn’t. I mean, this is what it really breaks down to.
Who is a great prospect? What does it take to enroll someone? Most people don’t fail.
Most people never really get started; and you’ll hear a lot of people say that our industry has a very high failure ratio.
Well, no higher than the owner of a restaurant, no higher than owning any other kind of business; and when you leave your job, or you leave behind your job mentality and step into a free enterprise, it requires a whole different level of mindset, posture, attitude – all meaning the proper frame of mind to become a connector – and what people don’t ever really master are three simple skills: asking, listening, and receiving, and there’s a tremendous amount of emotional resistance to asking.
Most people aren’t comfortable with asking for the order, asking for the sale, asking for a commitment, asking a series of questions so you can provoke someone’s curiosity.
Now, here is the common denominator in all of this – “people”, and the more you understand about people, the more you understand there are four different personality types, and that the four different personality types have different hot buttons, different reactions, different emotional requirements; and that doesn’t mean you have to spend a great deal of time, but you learn by this – repetition and experience; and what most of you are already finding is that if you can’t prospect in this game, you aren’t gonna make it, and here’s why people have challenges with this type of prospecting – because they approach it from a perspective of fear rather than fate.
For the largest majority of people, fear is a two-letter word – “No”. No could be the scariest thing you ever hear, but is it really that bad?
People fear they’ll be rejected and they end up taking the whole process personally, afraid of the negative outcome of prospecting.
Jeff Mills has had the privilege of coaching over 450 clients and devoting over 4000 hours in the last several years to honing his craft and understanding why people do what they do.
He routinely has six- to eight people joining his organization wanting his coaching per week. He doesn’ farm it out through a series of coaches that he’s trained, and he’s extremely good at understanding why people do what they do. “I can help people overcome their fears and have breakthroughs. I know a number of successful marketing techniques that always get good results,” said Jeff Mills.
Why do people sabotage themselves? Why do they get ready to get ready? Why does procrastination become the norm rather than production?
I know someone recently who’s just left his corporate job achieving six figures, and for the last month he hasn’t been able to get on the phone, what does it really take to succeed?
See, you don’t just ‘get on the phone’. You can put the phone in the middle of a room and sit on it, and that’ll be getting on the phone. That does not make you money, it makes you a moron.
What you get paid for is qualifying people for your time. Having conversations to see who’s actually committed, and what you’re gonna find if you’re talking to the American populace is that most people are interested, they’re not really committed; and what people really fear is change.
And when you present a great opportunity like Coastal Vacations Club, or your product and your services, it’s not that people don’t see value and it’s not that they don’t see value in you. Most of them can’t decide, and if you can’t ask for the order, ask for the commitment, then you’re only dealing with a very small percent of the population.
What you need to become is an order taker.
Jeffrey Combs told me, “There are three kinds of people when it comes to prospecting and connecting. There are order takers, there are sales people, and there are closers, and the people that make the most money in these opportunities are people that have the ability not just to close, but primarily to ask.”
Now if you are a closer, it means you feel good enough about yourself that you are comfortable in asking for what you deserve, and the reason most people don’t do this is they have receiving issues and they have deserve issues.
Most of our society is great at giving, and they give, give, give, and really what they’re giving for is approval, and then they end by giving their power away. I’ve seen people do everything correctly. They take people through a system. They actually get someone to warm up to them, but they aren’t comfortable in asking. They blow it at the close because they hate to ask for the money or simply don’t know HOW to ask.
A lot of our unconditional emotions based on our past keeps many of us in our present. All you have to do is go back to some of your conditioning you learned with the 20,000 meals you spent with your financial planners, and that would be your parents.
See, most of us spend 20,000 meals with a set of parents and this is where we learn all about conditioning, about success, about money.
We are told that “children are to be seen, not heard; don’t take money from strangers; don’t pry into other peoples’ affairs; don’t ask questions.”
Well, closers are able to ask despite or in spite of the circumstances. Closers have self-esteem. That means they have posture. They are confident about the task at hand. They have been through enough repetition and experience that they know who they are talking to. They know their real product, which are people. They realize the product solves problems, but marketing to people and developing people relationships is what you get paid for. Closers are great at listening. It means they can hear what people mean, not what they say.

As a past travel professional, I heard many, and I stress many horror stories about travellers that didn’t take travel insurance to protect their well-being and vacation investment!
Nothing was worse than getting that phone call from our travel tour operator telling me that our clients had an unfortunate accident, or suddenly became ill, and they did not have travel medical, and not enough money to cover their medical bills at destination, or enough credit on their card to purchase a one-way flight home.
All these incidences were avoidable if they just took the time to understand how extremely important having an emergency medical policy, or trip cancellation coverage while on their vacation.
I know many individuals comment that they never get ill, or injured on past vacations, and my feedback to them is that they have been very fortunate. I myself have never been severely injured, or ill during my vacations, but I don’t take any chances.
Just like home insurance, or car insurance, you never expect your house to burn to the ground, and you certainly do not anticipate ever getting into a car collision. However, we all buy protection for the un-known for these two incidences, correct?
The problem with vacation travel is that many people feel that their holiday is short-term, and the odds of something serious happening are less likely to occur. But if something were to happen where you end up in a foreign hospital, I don’t think you want to find out later that your medical bills have exceeded the value of your house, or your savings account!
Unknown Emergency And Accident Means Just That! You Never Know If And When Something Will Happen
It’s hard to put something in perspective if you have never had an emergency situation with your health, or have had a serious accident. So to help you I will tell you two stories that I have come across with my experience of being a travel agent.
One occurrence was a mother and child was booking a flight to travel home to Jamaica to attend a family wedding. Her travel agent booked their flight, and recommended to her insurance medical and travel cancellation coverage. The women declined, and the agent didn’t express the serious nature of not taking the policy, so in the end the woman had left her office without any medical coverage.
Months later, I had our local travel insurance representative come visit my office, and he told me this story, and the unfortunate result was her young boy had come down with an ear infection prior to their flight to Jamaica, and even though she was consulted by the boys doctor not to take the flight until his condition healed, she ignored the requests!
The mother didn’t have the money to purchase two more flight tickets for another date, and proceeded to take her original flight. The end result was her child ended up losing his hearing due to his eardrum becoming damaged during the flight, a sad story, but an avoidable one if she would have taken cancellation coverage, and re-booked her flight for another day when her son was better.
My next story really touches my heart, because it was a client of mine for many years. My past client god rest his soul, was a typical stubborn man that grew up in a farm community, and had a true understanding of comprehensive coverage for accidents, because he operated many heavy machinery.
When he first came into my office, he was travelling with a group of people including his wife, and when he booked his first vacation package with me, he haggled me to the point where I gave in, and offered him and his guests a substantial discounted price. His group was saving at least $150.00 per person for their vacation package. But when it came to offering him and his travel guest’s insurance policies, he was not budging. For people that know me, I don’t take no for an answer when it comes to your overall wellbeing.
In the end, I won the battle, and he and his wife purchased the travel insurance, and they talked all their guests in getting it as well. This small group travelled to a hot destination every year after, and it seemed that their group started to grow larger every time they came to see me, and all the time they would joke about wasting money on this insurance I always provided to them.
My client after dealing with me for several years now came in once again with the largest group ever, and they all agreed to take a vacation in Cancun. Most have never been to the Mayan Riviera, and they were extremely excited to go there! The problem this time is that with a really large group with many different personalities and characters, my client was less jokingly, and said that he was talking to one of his guests going on this trip with them, and he expressed his opinion that insurance is nothing but a scam, and us travel agents only sell it for the commissions.
As these comments really insulted me, my client’s guest was right! We do make commission off selling travel insurance, but by no means do we offer or sell it for the main purpose of making money. My client was truly influenced by what this other person had commented, and we ended up having a lengthy debate, to the point it was getting a little heated. With over 15 plus couples traveling together this time, was I willing to lose a client and such a large group because of insurance? Oh yeah! Believe it or not, I would drop that business in a heartbeat if I knew they were traveling un-protected, and I told him that directly as he and his wife sat across from me.
In the end, I had won the battle again, my client made many phone calls and also convinced the others to take the coverage, and even though his trip was fully booked with me, he did leave my office feeling a little battered and slightly upset.
The Phone Call A Travel Agent Never Wants To Ever Receive!
When we send our clients off to their next vacation destination, all we want to hear when they get back is how much they ate, drank, and how their trip was another experience that will give them many incredible memories. You want them to talk about it for months, and have the big post picture party where they all exchange vacation photos and talk about how Henry fell into the pool with a handful of Margaritas!
In this situation, it wasn’t like that, and several days after my client had left for his holiday, I received a phone call from one of our tour operators that I had booked their package with, and they had expressed to me with the deepest sorrow and apology that my favourite client had passed away. His wife out of respect had asked the tour company to notify me of what happened.
With extreme disbelief and shock, I was told that he went into the water when there was an extremely powerful undertow, and he drowned. The fact that you have over 30 people at destination for only one reason, and that’s to relax and have fun, it just didn’t register that all these people on this trip had suddenly had a serious un-expected tragedy on their hands, and now they all were cutting the vacation short to come home.
This story always brings tears to my eyes, and a feeling of emptiness to this day!
Whether this story tugs on your heartstrings or not, I just want to express a few things to everybody taking the time to read this. As a travel professional offering travel insurance, as well as many of the online travel companies that sell travel protection to their clients, want you to know that our sincere and true intentions are to make sure that each and everyone of you are covered and have the peace-of-mind! We don’t want to see you being left stranded anywhere without help, or become financially burdened by any un-expected medical incident or accident while away from your home.
I lost one of my favourite clients, and even though I call him a client, he and his wife were more like friends to me. One thing that really stuck with me when this tragedy came to a final conclusion, is that not only did the tour company that called thank me for offering medical/cancellation insurance, but my entertaining and grumpy friend’s wife, from that small farm town, expressed her deepest gratitude to me for being extremely stubborn with them, and not taking no for an answer when it came to protecting their best interests.
The next time you decide to travel, I highly recommend that you consider looking at your insurance options, and make sure you have sufficient travel protection. Be sure to check the policies offered and make sure it’s adequate for your travel situation.
I will be writing another article that will express the common pitfalls, and some of the incorrect information that you may be getting from your current work plans, or the credit card offers.

Pilot predicts future travel restrictions.

February 2 2004–The author of 2012 Airborne Prophesy predicts that within the next eight years additional security restrictions will be levied against American citizens. As an outgrowth of the fear generated by September 11, 2001, pilot Nina Anderson foresees the implementation of biometric scanning stations at all public places, and the use of transponders mandated to be worn by international travelers to track their whereabouts.

Aviation has been hard hit by the events that occurred in New York and Washington in 2001. Pilots are being looked at as possible terrorists and airports are temporarily shut down (TFRs) when the President or other named dignitaries are within thirty miles. Flight schools are under scrutiney to interrogate their students with potential background checks. The influx of foreign student pilots has virtually stopped. Even grass-roots airports are being required to erect security fencing and access is being limited to those pilots with identification cards.

Familiar to all air travelers is the long wait for bag checks and yet people are still boarding with sissors or box cutters. Nina Anderson, a commercial pilot for over thirty years, doesn’t foresee things getting better. She wrote her recently-released novel, 2012 Airborne Prophesy, to alert readers to the potential restrictions of personal freedom in the year 2011 and the development of “virtual” warfare and mind control through radiofrequency technology.

From current patents on file and research information she has gathered, Ms. Anderson has determined that “In the near future current biometric technology will go beyond viewing pilots as potential terrorists and shift focus to the population at large. It is highly probable that biometric scanners will be erected at the entrance to all public buildings-airports, supermarkets, theatres – in the name of security. International travelers will be fitted with a transponder band to be worn during their visit. These radiofrequency devices will transmit signals to a command center so the traveler’s whereabouts will be known at all times – in the name of security. Satellite technology will be increased to “spy” on anyone on earth in their own backyards – in the name of security.”

Although 2012 Airborne Prophesy is fiction it is based on fact, and the usage of technology that is currently in place and waiting to be released. The aviation industry has been hardest hit by the “war on terrorism.” The trickle-down effect has seen the aerospace industry take an economic slide. Expanding restrictions on personal freedom may affect the economy in as equally unforeseen directions. Is this type of attempt to uncover potential terrorists worth the risk of an unstable economy?

Time Travel with Huey Lewis and the News

The lights dimmed and the wrinkles, pot bellies, and bald heads disappeared into the darkness . . . almost.
People clapped and danced to their own rhythm as Huey Lewis and the News performed one hit after another at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington.
“I don’t know how to put this politely, ” Huey told the audience, “but I had dinner here at the casino and most of you are at least as old as me.”
I had eaten dinner at the same time as Huey. I left for the bathroom and came back into the restaurant and saw my wife and friends pointing and smiling in my direction. Huey had just walked past me and out the door.
Perhaps our clothes brushed each other. Perhaps we exchanged the same air. Oh, well our party had driven from Tacoma to Shelton, Washington to see Huey Lewis and I had the best opportunity for an up close and personal view, and I was adjusting my underwear. Such is life. Just like opportunity . . . we passed and never met.
Peg and I joined Donn and Debbie Irwin in their PT Cruiser (a classic car wannabe) for a comfortable journey. Donn fed the CD player with Huey’s Greatest Hits, and early rock and roll classics. Actually, Deb had him turn the volume down low so conversation could flourish, which it did. The trip lasted through several discussions, many smart alec comments, laughing fits, and one detour for Olympic Ice Cream (Kentucky Pie is yummy!). We caught up with friends Randy and Sue Lord at the casino for dinner.
After dinner, Donn and I went to the walk-in humidor for cigars, while the group went ahead to the performance hall. By the time Donn spent $30 for three cigars, we had a fairly long line to wade through. As we stood and waited, a little old man walked by everyone repeating the phrase “The heart of rock and roll is still beating.” We just looked at him and shrugged our shoulders. He turned out to be Huey’s father.
Sue reserved excellent seats. We were slightly elevated and about forty feet from stage left where Huey stood most of the time.
Huey’s lost some of his upper register, but his charm and energy carried him well through the evening. His group was outstanding. Most of them have been together a long time. Huey introduced them individually. The new guy he noted, “we didn’t meet until 7th grade.”
“So many hits, so little time,” said Huey when he came back for an encore. The concert was well worth the money and the drive. For a while I had more hair and less body as Huey Lewis and the News transported us back twenty-five years. Where has the time gone?

Interviewing Your Nursing Travel Company Before You Sign the Contract

In order for you to be completely happy with your travel company, you need all the information that you can get. You need to ask the following questions:

1. When does the health insurance start? Today is July 19th. I asked one question, if I started today when would health insurance start? They stated that it would start the 1st of the month after 30 days work. In other words, I would not get insurance until September 1 (or 43 days from now).

2. Can I include my domestic partner in my health insurance? I included my future spouse with one company (while another company would not insure him).

3. Do you reimburse me for nursing licenses? These can run $200 (by the time you go through nursys, your own state’s board of nursing, a criminal background check, etc.)

4. Do you provide FREE private (not shared with a roommate) one-bedroom housing? Some accommodations are for studios (no separate bedroom).

5. Do you offer the option of corporate housing? Corporate housing may provide a homier atmosphere.

6. Do you provide a FREE furniture package? Or do you provide any choices in a furniture package? I asked one company and they would charge extra for the linen and other things that should have been included. I felt if they were going to nickel and dime me now, they would do it later with my other monetary items.

7. Do you offer FREE basic utilities? Basic utilities may include cable, phone, trash, water, and sewer. You should know up front what utilities you will be responsible for.

8. Do you offer FREE CEUs? Some states require CEUs and you may need to keep up with them while away from home.

9. Do you give a completion bonus on this assignment? Maybe there is some extra money at the end.

10. Do you offer WEEKLY direct deposit? In other words, when do I get paid and how?

11. What about sick days? Do you offer a minimum of three sick days in a 13 week assignment without a financial penalty?

12. Can I have one month off between assignments (while retaining health insurance and without financial penalty)?

13. How much do I get paid for travel expenses? When do I get paid for travel expenses?

14. Do you offer a rental car package? How much would a rental car package cost?

The more information you know about a travel company, the better.
